Soldiers of Odin & the Stranger tells the story of the street patrol group Soldiers of Odin which was founded in Finland in 2015. Photographer Silla Simone (b.1991) follows the street patrol to its origins in Kemi, Lapland, as well as to Joensuu in North Karelia, the city which, as early as in the 90’s, gained a reputation as the informal skinhead capital of Finland. The artist Silla Simone accompanies the members from their club houses to their private homes to understand who the Odins actually are and why the group exists. With a classic documentary as her starting point Simone develops the series into a poetic tale and challenges the members of the street patrol to tell their life stories in their own words. Simone pushes the boundaries of the traditional documentary form by occasionally stepping in front of the camera, meeting the Odins in intimate images. She approaches a politically charged subject from a surprising angle.
