Jyrki Parantainen
Professor of Photographic Art, Head of Master’s Programme

Jyrki Parantainen (b. 1962) graduated as Licentiate of Arts in Photography from the University of Art and Design, Helsinki (now Aalto University, School of Arts, Design & Architecture) in 1999. He has taught photography at university level for over two decades, since his graduation as Master of Art in 1992.

His artistic practice could be described as an endeavor to combine his main medium – photography – with other art forms. His practice follows a preparation process similar to writing a script. Alongside photography his practice resemblances sculptural methods, process art and painting: it is time consuming, physical, partly three-dimensional, conceptual and reserves a big role for chance.

During his now almost twenty-five-year long career in photography he has held solo and group exhibitions around Europe, USA and Asia, including several solo exhibitions. Parantainen has played an active role in the esteemed Helsinki School since its founding years and remains as one of the School’s driving forces.
