Ella Kivinen and Linda Manner
Home / Utopia
Stoa gallery, Turunlinnantie 1, Itäkeskus, Helsinki
8.3 – 17.4.2019
Our student Ella Kiviniemi together with her colleague Linda Manner have an opening tonight at Stoa gallery, Helsinki!
A few words about the project featured in the show:
“Meillä / Utopia (Home / Utopia) is a documentary photo project on communal living. Finns usually live either with one other person or alone. The photojournalists Ella Kiviniemi (b. 1991) and Linda Manner (b. 1987) took photographs of people who share their homes with others. The decision to live in a community can be a practical but still marginal and political. Communal living forces people to understand and relate to others’ perspectives, a skill very much needed in the times of global crisis like climate change. Being together is natural but also challenging: everyday and utopia in one.
The exhibition is part of the Poliittisen valokuvan festivaali 2019: Mahdollisuus (Festival of Political Photography in Helsinki (PVF), which this year has a theme “Potentiality” and explores the capacity for collective imagination and the potential for action. The festival highlights photography projects that deal with smaller and larger changes, as well as alternative mindsets and lifestyles.
Please, go through the Festival’s amazing programme, and don’t miss the seminar at the Finnish Museum of Photography tomorrow!
